The Central Coast is Only a Short Train Ride From Central Station
Leaving Central Station, the train heads north out of Sydney, passing through the northern suburbs until Hornsby, and then through Mt Kuringai National Park, with its magnificent vistas of Australia’s beautiful bush land, and the vast variety of eucalypt trees. It is a wonderful place for bushwalking and there are many guided walks to choose from.
Brooklyn on the Hawkesbury River
Brooklyn is a small fishing village on the southern side of the Hawkesbury River crossing. All the homes in Brooklyn have been built around the river and are only accessible by boat as there are no roads because of the national park. The area was originally occupied by fishermen, but nowadays the houses are mostly used as holiday homes. A unique way to experience Brooklyn is aboard the postman’s ferry boat, which leaves daily from the wharf. Brooklyn is also known to grow the finest oysters, which can be bought from the local fish co-op.
After crossing the Hawkesbury River, the train line follows the Hawkesbury’s inlets and crosses over mountain ranges before arriving at Woy Woy, the southern end of the Central Coast. Woy Woy is an aboriginal word meaning deep water and was the home of Spike Milligan, the famous comedian and actor. This is also a great place for fishing as the name suggests.
The Waterways of The Central Coast
Gosford is the main railway station, and is the central city of the Central Coast. With its magnificent water ways and steep mountain ranges there is an attraction to suit all tastes. Brisbane Water is one of the many water wonderlands of inlets, lakes and beaches that is popular for many water sports.
The Central Coast is renowned for its beautiful sandy beaches. Terrigal Beach is a popular tourist location and is well-resourced with its many cafés that stretch along the Esplanade, and restaurants of Greek, Italian, Indian, Chinese and Thai cultures, as well as the best fish and chips. The Crowne Plaza hotel faces the ocean and is a perfect space to indulge for an afternoon or for those that need to be pampered for longer there are packages that cater for weekends or full weeks.
On the north of the Central Coast is The Entrance, a long time holiday favourite for family holidays with accommodation to suit all budgets. The Entrance is so called because it is the opening of Tuggerah Lake and famous for its bright seafront promenades which is host to daily pelican feeding, full of cafes, shops and multitude of activities for the children.
Getting Around the Central Coast
There is a good assortment of ways to explore the Central Coast. Coach trips provide guided tours, private hire vehicles give you the freedom to plan your own itinerary, cycling will enable a closer view of nature, ferries link the lakes and waterways, or travel Billy Connolly style on a motor trike that can be hired through Oz Trikes.
The Central Coast has something to offer for everyone, with its vast coastline of spectacular beaches, a stunning hinterland and world class attractions that have been drawing visitors for decades. With its short train journey of just over an hour, it is a convenient destination to get away from city life
