Train enthusiasts of all ages flock to Maitland in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales each year to celebrate Steamfest. With the inaugural Steamfest held in 1985, the festival now draws more than 80,000 visitors each year.

In 2008, Steamfest will be held on the weekend of the 19th and 20th April, with limited train excursions available on Friday, 18th April.

Displays and Exhibits

During the weekend a variety of model train and vintage engine exhibits are on display. These include an extensive range of model train displays with model railway engines and parts available for sale in some locations.

The Steamfest Rally Ground has a display of miniature locomotives and steam-powered traction engines and trackless trains. The owners and operators of these engines are available to answer any questions.

A Powerhouse Museum exhibit and displays of street steam, portable engines and vintage machinery ensure that there is plenty of entertainment for all vintage engine enthusiasts.

Markets, Stalls and Entertainment

For those whose interests range beyond steam locomotives and machinery, the Steamfest weekend is a fantastic time to visit Maitland. A variety of entertainment is provided to keep all ages amused. Jazz bands and other musicians play over the weekend in the park area near Maitland train station. Face painting, balloons sculptures and amusement rides are available for the children.

There are horse and carriage rides and miniature train rides for those who prefer to avoid the longer, and more costly, steam engine excursions.

Street market stalls line the streets around Maitland Station, selling everything from handcrafts and handmade lollies to toys, books and a variety of second hand goods. Local artists and craftspeople provide some wonderful products including candles, hand creams, fudge, roasted peanuts and wooden toys.

Local art galleries are open for visitors. Food is available at street stalls and in the local cafes, restaurants and pubs. There is something to suit all tastes and budgets.

A Fun Weekend for the Whole Family

It is easy to spend a few hours wandering around the many displays, markets and activities. It is best to purchase tickets for the steam engine journeys in advance, as they are very popular and are often sold out by the Steamfest weekend, particularly for the Great Train Race.

Most of the activities are in the outdoors, so wet weather can make the weekend less enjoyable. In fine weather, remember to pack a hat, sunscreen and to drink plenty of water.

The town of Maitland is situated 90 north of Sydney and only 25 minutes from Newcastle by car. For further information visit the Steamfest website or contact the Maitland Visitors Centre on +61 2 4931 2800
