Only got one day to spend in Melbourne? Make the most of your time and see what the central city has to offer with this list of top attractions.
Located on the Yarra River, Melbourne is home to more than 3.6 million people. The city has a strong European feel, with plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars, and wide, tree-lined streets. Modern skyscrapers sit alongside graceful buildings dating from the gold-rush era, while tiny laneways tempt visitors to explore. Federation Square Fed Square is where it all happens. More than 2000 events a year take place on its cobblestone plaza, including markets, music performances and cultural displays. Permanent attractions include the Ian Potter Gallery, the Australian Racing Museum and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, a museum devoted to all things film. Grab a beer at one of the many bars or enjoy the food at restaurants like Bok Choy Tang or Transport. Those staying longer in the state should step downstairs to the Melbourne Visitor Centre, where they can discover things to see and do right across Victoria. Eureka Skydeck The highest observation deck in the southern hemisphere, the Skydeck offers 360 degree views of the city, suburbs and bay, all from 88 storeys up. Thrill seekers can get an extra rush of adrenalin by entering The Edge, a glass cube suspended 300 meters above the ground and offering a dizzying glimpse of the street below. Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne's reputation as a garden city is well deserved. Parks and gardens abound, but this 38 hectare oasis is one of the best. The gardens are home to more than 10,000 species of plants, some of which are extinct in the wild. Plant buffs will enjoy the horticultural collections, such as the Tropical Greenhouse and Fern Gully, while kids will relish the chance to let loose in the Children's Garden, with its secret pathways and hidey-holes. During summer, the gardens host the Moonlight Cinema and Shakespeare in the Park. Queen Victoria Market Melburnians love their food and nowhere is this more evident than at the Queen Vic Market. The delicatessen hall is a feast for the senses, with olives, cured meats and artisan breads on display. In the meat hall, butchers and fishmongers clamor to sell their wares, while the colorful range of fruits and vegetables will keep foodies entertained for hours. Treat yourself to a freshly brewed coffee, indulge in an oven-warm pastry and soak up the atmosphere of one of Australia's favourite markets. Laneways and Arcades Melbourne's many laneways and arcades are the best places to discover a hidden gem. The Block Arcade, with its intricate mosaic floor, is home to the quaint Hopetoun Tearooms, as well as a number of high-fashion boutiques. Kids will love Block Arcade, where they can watch sweets being made and goggle at Gog and Magog, the two statues that chime the hour. For a true Melbourne experience, visit Degraves Street, where cafes and restaurants spill onto the footpath and the aroma of coffee scents the air. Getting Around Melbourne
