The Coal River Valley Wine Region near the historic town of Richmond, Tasmania, Australia is an excellent place to taste award winning wine at the cellar door.

The Wine And The Wineries

The picturesque Coal River Valley Wine Region, Tasmania, Australia surrounds the historic town of Richmond, only a twenty-minute drive from Hobart. There are more small, independent vineyards in this region than in any other part of Tasmania. This offers the visitor tastings and cellar door sales at more than 14 different wineries. The area is positioned at a similar latitude to the wine regions of Germany and France, and so the wine tends to be a cross over between the distinctly Australian wines of the mainland and a style more consistent with European wines. Many award-winning wines have come out of this area.

The Coal River Valley

It is well worth a visit to the Coal River Valley Wine Region even if wine tasting is not on your itinerary, because a drive through this beautiful valley has its own rewards. Mist over the vineyards, picnic spots by the river, and the fascinating town of Richmond with its famous convict built bridge, colonial gaol, Catholic Church, carriage rides and many restored Georgian buildings.

Tasting The Wine

The boutique wineries of the Coal River Valley Wine Region are small and unique. Some are open every day and have regular trading hours while others may require you to call ahead to book a time to visit their cellar door. If visiting the wineries does not appeal to you, but the wine of the region does, a visit to the liquor shop in Richmond will give you the opportunity to purchase wines from the local area.
