Williamstown in Victoria, Australia

Explore Melbourne’s Maritime Past in this Sea-side Suburb

Apr 28, 2009 Kate Machin

For those interested in maritime history, the sea-side suburb of Williamstown, located in Melbourne's west, offers a wealth of things to see and do.

As the original seaport for Melbourne and birthplace of the first colonial navy, Williamstown’s soul continues to be tied to the ocean. Home to some of the oldest yacht clubs in Victoria, Williamstown’s harbour is awash with boats and reminders of the suburb’s maritime past are everywhere. Wander the tree-lined streets, dine in a historic pub and take in the spectacular views of the Melbourne skyline, all the while letting the charm of this quaint suburb take you back to a gentler time.

Explore Williamstown with a Self-guided Heritage Walk

Pick up a free map from the Information Centre and wander through Commonwealth Reserve, home to the Tide Gauge House and the anchor from one of Victoria’s first naval ships, the Nelson. The walk also takes in Gem Pier, Customs House and the former Port of Melbourne Authority workshops. Finish with a visit to the Time Ball Tower (now one of only five working towers in the world), which passing ships once relied on to set their chronometers.

Sail on a Tall Ship

To experience what life on the sea was like in the late 1800s, take a sail on the Enterprize, Williamstown’s replica tall ship. Voyages include one hour sails, full day sails and overnight adventures. Other tall ships also regularly dock at Gem Pier; check with the Information Centre for details.

HMAS Castlemaine

Moored alongside Gem Pier, this Williamstown-built minesweeper served with distinction in the Pacific, Indian Ocean and China Sea. Experienced guides are available to explain the intricacies of the ship’s engines and weapons capability. Naval buffs will enjoy the collection of nautical memorabilia displayed in the crew’s mess. HMAS Castlemaine is open every weekend from midday to 5.00pm.

Blunt Boat Builders

Established in 1858, this historic family business has been building and repairing timber boats for five generations. Located at 150 Nelson Place, it runs open days so visitors can see traditional techniques in action.

Williamstown Maritime Association

The Association runs regular events at the former Port of Melbourne Authority site, such as the popular Heritage Boat Show. Explore the maritime precinct, taking in some of the old jetties and buildings, such as the old Williamstown morgue, then head to the Pirate’s Tavern on the Ann Street dock for a well-earned drink.

Williamstown Historical Society Museum

Located at 5 Electra Street, the museum is a great source of photos, exhibitions and artefacts. It’s open every Sunday from 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm, or other times by appointment. Entry is free.

Getting There

Williamstown is a 15 minute drive from the centre of Melbourne, over the Westgate Bridge. Trains to Williamstown depart regularly from Flinders Street Station. Ferries to Williamstown depart hourly from Southbank.
